I've got 93,000 mostly Highway miles on my 2001 9-3 base model.
The problems have been a DI Cassette failure which took the catalytic converter with it, and the SID.
With my highway driving I've been changing Full Syntmetic oil at 6000 to 6500 miles, and took a look under the valve cover at 60,000. No sign of sludge. Maintenance other than fluid and filter changes has been spark plugs and serpentine belt and idler pulley.
The AC/heater knob problem was fixed by the time mine was built, and I would recommend the manual over the auto climate control if you get a 2001 or 2002 model. The auto control is big bugs to fix, and as the years go by you can expect the auto controls to eventually be a problem.
I'm still on my original brakes and estimate another 25,000 miles or so before I replace them.
On older cars the cloth seats seem to hold up better than leather. Mine still look new, and I think they are more comfortable than leather
So I'd recommend looking for a 2001 or 2002 model with signs of good care and maintenance and keep a few hundred dollars in reserve for a DI cassette and a SID repair.
