the auto adjust spring gets tighter and the pedal gets closer to the floor (to compensate) - well it does it too much, and then you can't push the clutch in far enough to get reverse - I had the same problem with a new cable -
the previous one broke, and when I installed the new one, I ran down the adjusting screw for the pedal stop too far, and the spring jumped in and I could hardly get reverse after a week -
I went down and loosened the bolt, so the pedal sat higher, then went to the cable and release the spring pressure by hand - now it feels like a new clutch.
So get a new cable because yours is likely to break, and even if not you'll be able to shift!
Now this could be the trans. if the thing is worn enough but that's very unlikely - they usually fail outright.
