I've checked under the valve cover. No sludge. Not much oil getting up there.

The oil pressure relief valve cylinder was stuck in the bore. I had to work it with a pick (Very carefully..) One side of the cylindrical wall was scored vertically (as seen in some of the pictures posted by Anders and others.) The top flat was not scored at all. Slightly sanding it and replacing it caused the oil pressure to go up a tad.. (I can now get the oil lights to go away at ~1800 RPM).

I dropped the oil pan (Instructions posted many times here... but the only difference for me is that I can't "move the subframe out of the way". I had to take the one bolt (or 2) off and pry it down while someone else wiggle the pan off.

There was no sludge at all in my oil pan. (I used mostly mobile 1 after the 2nd oil change I think...) The only thing in the pickup screen was some little bits of metal from the broken balance drive chain.

As oppose to what I was thinking yesterday (get the oil pressure light off, make it back to MI and trade it in for a Malibu!). I think if its possible to change the balance shaft chain (and related broken parts) AND the timing chain drive without taking the whole engine out. I would do it and drive this car for another 50K miles...

From reading the tons of posts from Anders and Dean (and others), I think its possible...

I see lots of helpful guides for working on the timing drive on the net, but it requires engine removal. Is that really necessary? What about the balance chain drive? What else should I look for? I know the balance chain was broken right after my oil change and driving in the city for ~ 2 miles..)

Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated!
