Salvage titles.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 1999 Viggen with reconditioned title..., Coney, Mon, 1 Jan 2007 13:37:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In California I believe what your referring to is called a "salvage" title. Some things to note about that. You can never be sure what you're getting. It may indeed be what the seller claims, or maybe he has a file of pictures of gently wrecked cars. Either way when you accept or buy a salvage title vehicle you waive all claims. You'll never hear a salvage seller say "It was a terrible wreck, but I managed to make it look pretty good." It's always just a minor shunt, no mechanical damage....yeah right.
Two for one deal, the front half of one and the back half of another, or true minor damage that just happened to "total" the vehicle, the value of a salvage vehicle is roughly half of what a legitimate example would fetch. Salvage sellers make their money by trying to get 70-80% of normal prices to unsuspecting, trusting folks who don't really understand. I suspect there are 100k miles Viggens going for substantially under $10k without title issues so the price, $6,500, might be a bit strong for a salvage Viggen.
If your mechanically and cosmetically car savvy, as in a bodyshop holds no mysteries for you, than you might be a good canidate for owning a salvage vehicle. I would recommend a salvage vehicle only to people who are in the bodyshop business.
