The two cam shaft sprockets seldom needs to be replaced. They hold up quite well.
The timing chain tensioner also last forever.
This is quite a different type of failure on a year/model that is not known for this kind of problem.
So my guess is to chalk this up as a freak coincidence where something abnormal happened.
Even on the NG900 engines where I have seen many balance sprocket failures; none led to a chain break even though all teeth were gone and the chain was rapping over the semi smooth sprockets.
You mention the "bushings" going into the balance shafts. I can't quite figure out what that is?
Is it the two end caps that holds the shafts in place?
Did you also look closely on the counter rotating idler sprocket and the bronze bushing that one is riding on? I have seen that mounting post and bushing being worn out.
