Thanks. By not replacing the timing sprockets (and cam bolts) and tensioner, I save ~$100...
I'm not sure I have a different failure from others reported here. I've read here someone mentioning "its a common occurence to just remove the noisy balance chain from the bottom and not have one". Also, there are many complaints of a worn timing chain. Andrews of Princeton seems to be talking about that a lot on his site as well. Eitherway, it looks like its either a worn chain drive (balance and/or timing) causing low oil pressure by damaging the borderline oil pump system, or a failing oil pump system starving the chain drive.....
The damaged "bushings" I was describing is probably what you called "end-cap". The sprockets ride against it on the balance shafts. We didn't check the one on the idler sprocket because the idler sprocket itself is on a bearing/bushing. And the old one seems to rotate freely. (I am going to replace it anyway...) No damage to the teeth on that. We will removed it on monday to check for damage..
A quick question: Do you know how the timing marks are matched up on the 2 balance shaft sprockets? I guess the notch is the mark on the sprocket. What about the shaft/end-cap? (I admit I didn't get a close look at the car yet, but thats what my dad want to confirm...)
