I hit it with PB Blaster, then spent an hour or 2 removing the aft ends of the cables. The adjusting nut came free very easily. But as I backed it all the way out on the threaded pull rod, it became tighter & tighter. Maybe enough oxide got wedged in the threads, because it didn't free up by turning it back in. I got to the point of no return & either way I went I could feel the rod yielding. By that time it was too late.
Hindsight....
Once it came loose, I should have gotten a lot of lubrication on the threaded end. Blaster frees up the rust, but it's not a good lubricant. Smearing with grease or anti-sieze probably would have been good BEFORE I started turning it back over that long end of the pull rod.
