lost gas cap; check engine light

Yestreday evening, when it was 7 below zero, I drove off from the gas station without putting the gas cap on (my brain was frozen because of the cold). Very soon the "loose fuel cap" light came on. I had to be someplace, so I left the car parked for a few hours, then drove to Autozone and replaced the gas cap this morning. (Total distance driven without gas cap ~ 4 miles.)
On the way to AutoZone, Check Engine Light came on. Once CEL came on, I immediately took it to the SAAB dealer. The guy came back and said the codes revealed several things - "air in the system", "fuel leakage or spillage" and "engine misfiring" (these are not the exact words, but something similar.)
I know the CEL sometimes goes away after a few cold starts. However, the dealer scared me and said that I could drive but not a lot because ..... (he mumbled something about "air in the engine" or something.) So he suggested I should take it back to him this week, he will charge $129 for diagonostics and then repair whatever needs to be repaired.
My question is: can I afford to wait and see if CEL goes off on its own? Or, based on what he said (best as I can remember) and what happened, will I do severe damage to my engine by waiting?
All help will be appreciated.
