I've seen all the posts regarding the relative difficulty of extracting the various plugs on the manual tranny, use of which fluids, etc. I just thought I'd post my experiences here.
Getting the plugs open was not a problem in the least for me - in spite of the fact that about 125 000 of the 128 000 miles on my 93 were added in salt-infested New England. The drain plug in particular yielded very readily to an 8mm standard L-shaped Allen wrench lovingly banged with a small ball-pein hammer ;-) The fill indicator came off just as others described with a "pop". What was interesting on my car was that the fill plug was not an 8mm Allen plug, but a more or less standard-looking 24mm drain-plug.
BTW, it is definitely much easier to do this operation with the LF tire removed to gain access and visual contact with the drain and fill-level plugs.
I drained the oil that as far as I know has been in the car since 1 000 miles (OK maybe my mechanic changed it at 30 000) - it did not look that bad and drained readily. It was dark brown/black just like used motor oil. I did one flush with "el Cheapo" 10W-40 motor oil, drove the car about 3 miles, drained and then filled with Redline MTL, as the drained motor oil looked pretty darn clear.
BTW, I learned something new - which at age 50 doesn't happen as often as it once did: Tighten your lug nuts like you're putting the wheel back on 'til the next rotation! I only snugged them figuring I was going to drive 3 - 5 miles and take the wheel off again. Believe it or not, the lug bolts started to back out and I got some wobble in the last mile of my journey. It was scary enough that I got back home at about 10 mph. The bolts were loose!
Also, make sure that you have a nice big blanket or huge drip pan underneath, as once you open the drain plug, the oil really shoots out, bounces off the frame member and drips all over the place! My driveway has a bunch of kitty litter on it now :-)
Again, the weird part with my trans oil change here was that the top plug (fill) was NOT an Allen plug but required a 24mm socket to remove it. The bottom plug was not bad.
