Can't unequivocally say that there's a problem as the manner of cooling has changed, but I changed the turbo in my '85 900S when I got a ton of smoke after sitting at idle for a long time chatting with friends, then taking off in a normal manner, then over the course of the next couple of weeks heard disturbing bearing-sounding sounds from the vicinity of the turbo. I found a junque=yard turbo and exchanged with good results. The car had about 175 000 miles at the time and had always been allowed to idle 30 seconds before being shut down.
That having been said, my 1999 93 has its original turbo at 128 000 miles and is going strong. I think the water jacket has aided reliability of the turbo.
The moral of the story is, to me, that if you are hearing "scary" sounds from the vicinity of the turbo, you should be concerned. Otherwise, I would not worry too much about a change in pitch or intensity. It could portend a failure somewhere down the road but if you're changing your oil regularly it may just be the creaks and groans that accompany old age ;-)
