If it is as easy as a broken pulley or serpentine belt or both and if the mechanic knows about how to convert to the short belt configuration, it might cost you somewhere between $150.00 to 200.00.
But it kind of worries me when you say that within a couple of minutes, the car wouldn't start. That hints to me that you DIDN'T shut down the car when the belt broke and lost steering but kept on going.
If you kept driving the car without a working water pump, you might have done a lot more damage to the engine.
The battery doesn't go flat that quickly after the alternator stops charging so I wonder????
