Wow, its been a ride this week. Indy mechanic pulled the valve cover and there was no sludge. So there was not point in fighting this with SAAB. He then did a compression test. No compression on Cyl #1. Pulled the head. Cyl#1 scored badly. Cyl #4 scored. He is sure that it was not sludge. He thinks that it was an overheat condition. Strangely we just had the thermostat changed (was stuck open before). Seemed to work perfectly after Thermostat change, no warning lights or high temp indicated on the temp gauge. I guess we will never know.
We ordered a used engine from a salvage place. Has just 45K miles on it. We figured that $5500 was less than buying a new car at this point.
And that is (hopefully) the end of the story !!
