Poor gas mileage - another possible cause: tire size

I just solved a high fuel consumption / low gas mileage mistery that started about 1 year and a half a ago so I thought it would be nice to share it, maybe it will help others.
I've checked a number of things - see the thread id 220117 I started a while back and the responses I got
I went to the dealer and they told me they can not really fix the low MPG issue if the ECU says everything it's ok and everything else has been checked.
The last thing I did is changing the oxygen sensor on my own and that seemed to improve the mileage by ~20% but as I drive mostly city and with a heavy foot it was really hard to say if the new O2 sensor made a difference. I believe it did.
So I kind of gave up on this until I changed tires.
The Saab factory tires are 205/50/16. Well - when I changed them I found that my car had 205/55/16 on it.
It seems like this tire size 205/50/16 is rather rare and stores don't have it in stock in general. Whoever owned the car before probably did find the right tire size and they went with a slightly larger one.
After I put the new tires on I checked the odometer reading and it's very accurate.
So my odometer was simply wrong by 10%. I read somwhere that if you change the tire size you need to adjust it in the ECU but it looks like my ECU is adjusted to the factory tire size anyway because the odometer reading is correct now (I never thought of checking the odometer before).
Ever since I changed the tires my mileage went up by about 15% - tested on highway.
