Saab used 195/60-15 and 205/50-16 size tires for the NG900 (MY1994-1998) and on th 9-3 (MY1999-2001). For the 9-3 MY2002, Saab used 195/60-15 and 205/55-16 size tires. The Viggen model of the 9-3 came stock with 215/45-17 size tires.
195/60-15 equals a diameter of 24.21-inches and a circumference of 76.07-inches, let's call this size 'base'.
205/50-16 equals a diameter of 24.07-inches and a circumference of 75.62-inches, or -0.6% of the base size.
205/55-16 equals a diameter of 24.88-inches and a circumference of 78.16-inches, or +2.7% of the base size.
215/45-17 equals a diameter of 24.62-inches and a circumference of 77.34-inches, or +1.7% of the base size.
I personally run 205/55-16 size tires on my NG900 and the speedometer, odometer, and SID all show the MPH and miles driven as 3% lower than actual measured values. This is exactly as would be expected as the car is calibrated for 205/50-16 tires and the 205/55-16 tires are 2.7% larger, fooling the car into having an inaccurate readings.
Depending on the model and year, a dealer can use the TECH II to set the speedometer/odometer for a standard range of tire sizes.
Therefore, I don't think that the 205/50-16 tire size alone corrected your low fuel mileage. I don't know what else may be involved, however, I am glad to hear that the problem has been corrected.
