2nd gear making noise

For the last 3 days when I try to go into 2nd gear it makes a loud grinding noise. If I go into 2nd gear slowly it doesn't make the noise as much. I can by pass and go straight from 1st to 3rd but the car stutters. I have a 1998 900 SE convertible turbo 5 speed. Please advise
