Just following up, for those interested;
I took it to Swedish Prestige (great shop, BTW) and they diagnosed a bad fan resistor which means that it doesn't do low speed, only high; as a result, the radiator fan only comes on when it gets quite hot, drawing a lot of current at startup.
In my mind, that may be responsible for some, but not all of the behaviour we saw. I do notice that it hasn't happened since I tightened up the battery ground strap, so *hopefully* we're OK now.
One other note; SP said that an ignition key problem wouldn't cause the SID to lose its memory, as that doesn't go through the ignition, but instead goes relatively directly to the battery.
