manually opening/closing my convertible?

Hi- Yesterday my convertible top wouldn't open properly and just "stuck". The motor for the top still works and I've been told it's probably a hydraulic issue. Anyways, I used the switch to turn off the motor and manually close the top but I'm wondering if I can manually open it as well? The manual says no but I'm not getting the car fixed right away and really want to open the top. Any advice? Thanks.
