Well the 9-3 isn't the taughtest car I don't find it to be horribly vague.
Wobbly under power, tipsey in corners but I always felt mine tracked pretty well. The 99 9-5 didn't have an Aero version of suspension so while a tight chassis I wouldn't expect the handling to be as different as you suggest.
Is your 9-3 'base' maybe the SE suspension I know is a little firmer?
Maybe you've got some worn ball joints, shocks, soft tires etc?
For sure the 9-3 has some easy upgrades, steering mount, brace, rear sway bar. I've replaced springs & shocks with Koni Sport kit and the lower and firmer ride is sweet.
Drop by a dealer and test drive an '02 with 16" wheels and compare to yours.
