If you are going to pull the tranny to replace the clutch, I would think about converting it to a hydraulic clutch (I'm in the process of doing that now).
I went through a cable about every 30k miles. I suspected that there was binding in the thrust bearing/clutch assembly however when I got the tranny out I found it to be smooth as silk with totally no binding or worn parts.
The cable gets it's adjustment via the long spring on it (near where it comes out of the firewall on the engine side and by a bracket connected by the wheel well that holds the cable in place. People have had trouble with that bracket. I would check it. They are cheap, only $10 from the dealer. Also, you can grab the spring and kind of jack it gently back and forth to get it to take up some of the play.
Finally, check the cable on the transmission end right were it enters the blob of lead on the end (you can pop it temporarily out of the fork and pull back the plastic retainer doodad to see the very end of the cable). If there is ANY funkiness there at all you can assume it will snap soon.
I always carried a spare cable and complete changing instructions with me on trips. It paid off when my wife was on long trip in the middle of nowhere on memorial day when the cable broke. She was able to find a mechanic and get it replaced in a few hours.
