Found the name of the mystery solenoid on the firewall (00 9-3SE). I happened to look at the emissions sticker under the hood and it's called "Turbo Bypass Control Valve" and has dashed lines representing the vac lines. I replaced all three 4mm vac hoses that connect to the solenoid and one from the fuel pressure regulator to the intake manifold. Now that my vac lines are replaced I seem to have aggravated the problem even more. Now the surging is ridiculous under light throttle. With the gas pedal pressed slightly the car lurches repeatedly pretty hard. It happens in any gear (it's a manual) and you can see the turbo gauge surge with the engine. Under hard acceleration the car runs fine so the problem seems to be occuring mostly during off boost and transitions coming off boost. Somewhere the pressure is not equalizing. The rough idle seems to happen less but I only drove it for 15 minutes so that may not be true tomorrow.
Back to the valve, I am getting 12V at the electrical connector with the ignition swith in the ON position but if i disconnect and reconnect the power plug I hear nothing. When I connect a 9V battery i hear a really faint click. I tried blowing/sucking through the hoses and nothing changes when the valve is enenrgized or not. So it looks like the valve may not be working properly. So now I think the next step is to replace it, so why did saab have to rivet it on? I'll post again once I find one since they are not listed on eeuroparts or thesaabsite. We'll see what the dealer wants to charge when I call them tomorrow. The part number is hard to read but is either 9183002 or 9483002 or 9488002...something like that. So if anyone knows the real part number I would appreciate it.
