Two days ago, the ! light on my 2000 9-3 Convertible (63k miles) came on. I discovered that the thermometer was in the max heat range. I turned my heat on, and it went down to normal. I've been driving the 10 minute drive to and from work with the heat on. Having the heat on seems to work for the first 9 minutes, but in the homestretch the temp starts to rise.

I'm taking it in for service tomorrow morning, and have no idea what to expect. I've sunk thousands of dollars into this car for this repair and that repair - you name it, I've had it. This year, the car was diagnosed with engine sludge, which is too costly a repair for me to make. Saab denied my claim because two of my oil change receipts didn't include synthetic oil and that Saab filters were not used (which is recommended, not required, according to the Saab manual, but that's another gripe).

As for the current situation, there are no warning lights except for the ! on the dash. The check engine light does come on occasionally (but not in combo with this) but goes off after a few restarts. The car sometimes starts in limp-home mode, but a restart will also fix that. And, every month or so, the car just won't start at all. Allowing the engine to cool for an hour or so will get the car started again. I've had the car serviced before for this non-starting issue, so I don't know what the deal is with that.

I'm wondering if anyone has had something similar happen, and what the diagnosis and result was. I'm on a budget, so I'm hoping the repair won't exceed the $500 mark.
