Hello all, I posted previously that this summer my 1999 9-3S conv T-5 (auto) with MBC+A, K&N filter and free flow exhaust (with 89K miles) developed a wonderful rattle when I was parked at red lights on my daily commute. I had replaced the transmission and rear engine mounts at 60K miles when my DI cassette failed. the rattle sound would go away one I would begin to move, never appeared at highway cruising speeds, or if I held the brake and gave the engine a little gas to bring the idle RPM just over 1000. but, the noise got progressively worse. It was a hard almost clacking sound. I also found out that if I turned off my air conditioning, the noise would lessen (not go away).
So, I kept daily diagnosis the problem on my 45 minute commute (one-way) and on the way to work one day while sitting at a red light, smoke started to billow out from under the hood. It was white and smelled electrical?? It wasn't sweat like overheating and my gauges didn't show anything wrong. I was going to move through the light and pull over, when I noticed that the car really acted the same and the smoke and smell went away. i was close to work, so I babied the car to work, open the hood, and noticed a little smoke coming from the front of the engine left of the turbo near the A/C and power steering pump. everything was too hot to touch. I drove the car home. A/C and Steering was fine, until about a mile from home and my belt fell off (it didn't break) (BTW, I replaced this at 60K). The pulley above the tensioner pulley was destroyed and plastic was embedded into all the other pulleys. I replaced the pulley and belt over the weekend, drove the car around the block (no A/C) and noticed large plumes of smoke coming from the passenger front side of the car. I stopped the car in my neighborhood and noticed the pulley I just replaced was destroyed again!! now, i know there are billet pulleys out there for saabs (http://www.wazeepulleys.com). unfortunately, they don't make it for late year '99 saabs yet..
So, what could this problem be? A/C compressor ceased?? I don't know, I can turn it by hand without the belt or engine on. It does feel like the pulley could be loose because it doesn't feel as secure as the others (I guess it has a small wobble, but I am not sure if that is the clutch there) Also, when I move the pulley, I don't think the clutch is engaged. Plus, I dind't have the A/C on when I drove it around the block and destroyed a pulley in seconds. could it be my power steering pump? I don't know, it drives fine. There is no shuddering in the wheel while moving or while it is parked and i turn the wheel.
So, super friends of the Saab world, what do you think? I have purchased another plastic pulley and belt to attempt this repair over the weekend. any pointers will be greatly appreciated.
