Actually trailer hitches are designed for a fore-aft force. For a 3500 pound trailer, I'd be surprised if the allowable tongue weight was much more than 250 pounds. Allowing for the dynamics of a moving vehicle, that means the hitch is probably designed for up & down forces of 500 or 700 pounds.
If you really really want to use it as a lifting point, I'd remove all the carpeting in the trunk so you can get a good view of the attachment points (without being underneath...) Watch them & the surrounding sheetmetal very very carefully for any distortion.
