There are a bunch of torx bolts that hold the valve cover on. Sometimes it sticks any you have to bang it loose with a soft mallet. Check the EGR hose coming out of the valve cover for residue. If you find anything significant here you can be sure the engine is not clean too.
Sludge or carbon cleanup is easier the sooner you catch it. Doing a flush with B-12 Chemtool or SeaFoam every oil change will help but the best thing I have used is Auto-RX. After the initial treatment I continue to use it at a maintenance level at each oil change.
SAAB went through a bunch of revisions with their EGR system in the T7 engines from 2000-2003. This no doubt contributed to the sludging so having it addressed is a concern. Synthetic is necessary for turbos in the long run but changing oil & filter at 1K seems like overkill. Solvent flushes and Auto-Rx will do the job if the engine is not too far gone. Lots of good before & after pics are on the net if you search.
