Perhaps this is an oversimplification of the issue but its my understanding (from what I've been told and it appears to make sense so I saw no reason to not believe it) that cars with an exhaust manifold/pipe that goes directly under the oil pan can be prone to sludge as the heat from the exhaust pipe cooks the oil. On the OG 9-3's I think the oil pan was even horseshoe shaped to allow for passage of the exhaust pipe, thereby accentuating the heat transfer. Cars with the exhaust manifold facing front tend to have this design because the pipe has to wrap around the front and under the engine and the most direct route is right below the oil pan (Toyota camry and lexus cars shared the design and the problem). The new 03 and above 9-3's have the manifold exiting the rear of the engine and therefore heat from the exhaust does not transfer to the oil pan and/or engine and should reduce sludge generation.
