I own a 2001 Viggen (56k) and this has been a cause of concern for me.

While I do not doubt that sludge can happen, I question how much of it is caused by a lack of maintenance vs. a mechanical problem?

Anyone that waits 10k between oil changes is asking for a problem down the road IMO.

I have talked to service techs (at 45k miles) that said, As long as you change your oil/take care of your car "as you do" you should not have a problem.

Also I was talking to Paul from Automotion at Carlisle this summer...while I did not ask him about the sludge issue I found on his website later that they do not recommend Mobil 1 since it does not handle the higher temps.

http://www.automotion-saabvolvo.com/faq.html#Answer23

"Use a good quality oil and change it every 3000 miles. Do NOT use Mobil 1. We have found that it breaks down and cannot hold up to heat created by turbocharged engines."

So the question becomes is the oil breaking down? If so is it caused by lack of changing or is it a problem with the oil used (or a combo of both).

Or is it a problem with the engine design?

It is easy to argue that a Honda can go 30,000 miles without an oil change and no damage, however a Saab turbo is not a Honda.

I am bringing my Viggen for a 60k service in the next couple of days. (3.5k miles early) I will request that they check for sludge, and let you know what I find.
