From the posts here it seems the extension specs changed without much changing in the engine so the rumors are that it was in response to the sludging problems and an attempt to cover up the wear problems with that particular engine. Everybody seems to have a different opinion but chains are supposed to last the life of the engine. I did a full timing/balance chain and guide R&R a few months ago (18mm, 150k) and it was a lot of work. My guides were worn and one of the balance chain guides had completely shattered. The BC tensioner was also busted and applying pressure to the TC guide causing excessive stretch. However, I would have just pulled the balance chain and rolled in a new timing chain. Check the oil pan for plastic bits. If it's clean I wouldn't worry. My TC was stretched but it looked like it was in good shape and although the BC guides were destroyed the TC guides looked serviceable.
There is also a Saab bulletin that recommends replacing the chain only as a remedy.
