First, thanks to all who have replied. To update, my brother (a boat mechanic by trade) and I both initially suspected a bad/sticking t-stat. The problem all morning has been finding someone actually WILLING to work on the car. The local import indies are all on vacation, conveniently enough. To answer the previous questions, the radiator fan is working properly, even for a few moments after the car is shut off. There don't appear to be any bubbles on the dipstick nor any noticeable coolant loss. The only thing I didn't mention beforehand was the marked temp increase when going uphill (don't normally have that problem in Louisiana!) Also, the turbo bypass valve is hooting (it's next on the repair list)...would this have any bearing on the issue?
I'd readily agree that the heater trick is a gamble, at best, and we're definitely going to make sure we've got the problem corrected before venturing back. If anyone else has any advice/suggestions, they're certainly welcome. Otherwise, it's off to the local Autozone...thanks again all!
