The Cat Converter position is not the root of the sludge problem. Poor crankcase ventilation causing oil degradation making it prone to sludge formation at high temperature areas is. There are cars reported on in this forum that have gone 200,000+ miles without the sludge problem. They have had frequent oil changes, high quality oil, and have not been used in stop and go city traffic where the mileage may be low, but long periods of idling have occurred ( this is when the poor ventilation is a problem).
I would suggest avoiding this model if it will subject to short trip stop and go driving. If it will see at least part time highway duty, PCV fix number 6 along with proper oil changes with high quality oil should make the sludge problem manageable, if you can verify that sludging is not present to start with. If the car you are looking at does not have a well documented oil change history, do not proceed without dropping the pan if you want to minimize your risk. See the Andrews of Princeton web site for more information.
Also: The sludging problem with this model lowers resale value for everyone who owns one. You should take this in to account when deciding how mucc to pay for one.
