Not so sure about this tip from a labor standpoint as getting to the relay requires an act of god. I'd almost guess that cutting up the rear floor is easier. On the 9000, if the relay is conveniently under the hood where it's accessible, then yes. On my 2001 9/3 it's under the dash, behind the fuse panel somewhere. You basically need to be born there in order to service it. I may still end up changing mine as I had no power to the fuel pump fuse originally and now, suddenly, I have power for the prescribed 10 seconds or so with the key in the on position. If the ECU does not sense engine rotation within a small amount of time, it shuts off the relay and hence, the fuel pump circuit. I jumpered a wire from the battery to the pump and got one rotation before it died. I could shake it and get another rotation or two. It seemed to have a dead spot. On mine, if the relay is working, you should at least hear it click on and off when the ignition key is toggled. You can verify this with a test light on the feed side of the fuel pump fuse. Voltage should be full. You have ten seconds to test.
