After suffering similar symptons as you with gauges working and not working I opted to replace the cluster. It gets progressively worse, a bang on the top of the dash would cure it for a while but it would always return to not working. I bought my cluster used off of a popular auction site for $40 or so with verified low miles of 40k. My mechanic rolled the mileage forward to match the original and so far the guages have been top notch, an added bonus was all of the back lights now work so the cluster is brighter. I found a posting about fixing the circuit board in the cluster but considering the amount of work to remove and reinstall the cluster after "maybe" fixing it I decided replacing to be much cheaper and less time consuming.
good luck whichever way you choose,
George
