my understanding from a Saab TSB from 1997 was that all manual gearboxes from that point on were coming new from the factory with synthetic installed. If you have a 9-3, I assume that means you should have the synth oil unless you know otherwise.
it may also depend on the year, as i know they also switched to ANOTHER type of synth oil at some later point. check your owner's manual?
what would concern me here is that you have a high mileage tranny (assuming yours is original), that has gotten used to running with a certain type of lube - all the internal parts that the lube is designed to protect have "worn in" to whatever that lube spec is. if you replace that lube with something else, especially something that Saab never recommended to begin with, i think you're asking for trouble down the road. when i asked my indy about switching to synthetic at 145K, he told me in no uncertain terms that it was a bad idea with a gearbox that old.
bear in mind also that just because your tranny shifts fine now doesn't mean you aren't hurting it with this new stuff - you just won't know it until the moment when it strands you.
