I wouldn't say that 5000 is fine unless you change the oil filter at 3500 - I don't think those filters (unless you get the heavy duty ones) are designed to last that long. So even though the oil is ok, the filter may not be. One good rule of thumb i do, if i am checking out a car i'm going to buy, is the 1/8 inch finger rule. Touch the oil on the dip stick the touch your fingers together and slowly spread them apart. If the oil is "elastic" enough to stretch the distance (1/8") before it breaks apart, then it's ok. - I also smell it and check to see if there is a burt smell. - Seems to me that as cheap as oil is (for now) and how expesive it is to fix a problem, it makes sense to change it often...
