Ok, so after a brutal Milwaukee winter complete with massive potholes, a few sinkholes (I missed those personally), and one hopped curb, I've got several suspension issues.
Separately, I managed to cross-thread a bolt on the passenger side front when putting on the winters so I'm replacing the hub & bearing assembly on that side with a junkyard part.
Additionally, I just found that the front driver's side spring has broken, and about 2/3 of one revolution is clinking around in there and I'm riding on the rest of the spring. I was hoping if I was going to lower the car at least it would be uniform....
So - basically, I'm looking for what my options are.
I know a guy parting out one, could get a single used spring of roughly the same vintage and mileage, ride would be similar to before.
I could go to 2 or 4 new springs so they are 'balanced'.
I could do springs and shocks, since I'm going to have the hub off on one side anyway...
Basically, I'm looking for what my options are. This is a '97 SET that I just bought this fall. Daily driver in mild rush-hour (Milwaukee isn't that bad, usually above 40 on highway). Limited funds because I also need new tires...knew that when getting the car, but costs are adding up...
Also, for a guy who's never touched a suspension before, is any/all of this a DIY project? I'm mechanically inclined, but never touched something this integral to safe driving (done multiple exhausts, door swaps, clutch in C900 - but that's easy since it's off the front of the engine, didn't have to pull anything.
Basically, to date I've done a bunch of part-swapping, but never anything that required finesse. Am I in for a chance at a big hassle/problem if I get into this myself?
Any and all thoughts appreciated.
I'd consider Viggen springs, not sure about Koni's... I will be driving this for family vacations, and really want the kids to sleep in back :) (looking at 14-hr drive one-way in June/July, need to have the car happy by then)
