Broken tie-rods in/out and what to do

I got new tires on my 2002 9-3 SE at a local tire shop. They were quite shot and it had been about 30,000 miles since my last alignment, so I asked them to do that, too.
While they had it on the rack, the service manager called me into the garage to look at the tie-rods, both left and right. Long and short of it was that the right side was missing a bolt and the adjustment screw was frozen, while the left side bolt was crushed (I'm unclear if the left side adjustment screw was frozen, too, or if they were just afraid of trying to move it under the circumstances).
Bottom line is that they said they couldn't do an alignment and called for a price on new inners and outers for both sides. With parts, labor and a new alignemnt, the total was $1,005 (that's not including the tires).
I stared at it for a moment. Guy said it would be a few days before he could get the parts in. I've been in the situation of sticker shock with parts on this car, and been in the situation of not finding parts easily, so I finally said, sure, order the parts.
But I haven't paid for it yet and I'm considering cancelling. After thinking that there was no way these could be that much, I went online and started searching for tie-rod ends, both inner and outer. I was coming up with prices that were more like $250-300 for the parts. So, even if I'm paying a few hours of labor, I can't imagine the cost is that much.
My question is, first, does this make sense to anyone (I've never done tie-rods and don't claim to know much about them) and second, am I finding all the parts they're talking about, or am I missing something crucial? In other words, am I being ripped off or not?
One last note: the service manager did say that only one side was out, so not getting an alignment right away wasn't going to chew up the tires fast. But even if that is the case, should I wait? Steering wheel is only off a little and it just ever-so-slightly bares to the right.
Thanks!
