Wow, this is a little scary; the scenario you described, mileage, car, year, symptoms, everything, is identical to the ones I had about 6 months ago.
Well to start off with it is your turbo seals, stupid GT17.
The problem, with driving on a turbo that is biting it is the collateral damage it may cause. The turbo may last another 30K miles, but you will be replacing all of his friends frequently. These include:
-O2 sensors
-Clean out IC
-replacing TB
-blowing out any lines it may have clogged
-new catalytic converter
-Spark plugs
-oil
-basically anything the oil would come in contact with, not to mention the embarrassment related to that puff of smoke.
My advice would be to replace the turbo with a TD04 as soon as possible. I have a follow up post on the thread, "So, my turbo is going..." detailing all that I did and what I found. Low mileage turbo should only cost about $300 from a salvage yard and you can do it yourself in about 7 hours.
Best of Luck,
