The ignition switch delivers power to several users including lights, fuel injection and starter and things like that.
So when you turn on the ignition, you just don't turn an on/off switch (like the T-Ford) but the ignition switch actually portions out the battery power over several pins and one of the pins are called +X on the wiring diagram and switch.
Another pin is called +50 which supplies the starter solenoid with power.
Another is +15 which is crucial for fuel injection and a +54 that supply other things like lights.
So that's why a failing ignition switch can very well turn over the starter but not turning on the injection starting the car or it can start the car but not turn on the lights and so forth.
