I actully switched going the other way from 87 to 93... Why? At the local Costco, 87 is about $4.10/gal. and 93 is about $4.27/gal... a difference of $0.17 or about 4%... which means if 93 gives me no better milage, I've overspent by 4%, 4% better mpg it is a wash, and anything over 4% better mpg is a savings... But then supposedly 93 has more detergents and whatnot, so there is some benifit there.
Measuring tank to tank differences is hard, especially as you always have some of the other stuff in the tank, different driving conditions, how much someone else drove the car (my milage always drops after my wife drives it), etc... so I would not be real confident in being able to measure a real 4% difference in mileage.
When gas was a buck or two a gallon and the cost difference was around 20% to 10% between 87 and 93, I could totally see using 87... but not when the difference is 4% and getting smaller... or to mix it to about 90 a difference of about 2%, (which I have also done).
Also, I no longer complain about the cost of Techtron, as a bottle is now less than 1% of my fuel costs between oil changes.
