Thanks for the excellent and quick follow-up. I'll check the gap to see if the wear is an issue. When I took the left sensor bracket off, the plastic pin broke off. The repair shop didn't bother to clean up the rust and crud; they just hammered it in. After cleaning up the heavily rusted surface and the pin hole, I noticed that the sensor can be rotated toward the toothed rotor when the pin is broken off. So I'll be able to set the gap and see if this fixes the problem. Hope to get to this over the Holiday weekend.

Do you know what resistance the sensors should read? These seem like simple magnetic pick-ups which should work if not shorted or open.
