The same was happening to me, and I realized it was going away when the A/C kicked on. It was the A/C pulley. It wasn't very visible, but after watching closely, there was a random shake and rattle when the A/C clutch was disengaged. I'm currently using a shorter belt, bypassing the A/C, until I get it fixed. Rotating the pulley by hand, it only shakes in certain spots. I guess this was why it was so random sounding.
You can also remove and check the timing chain tensioner to see how far it has extended. This will give you peace of mind on that.
