Thanks for your suggestions Bob. Checked things over and indeed the temp is OK while moving but rises when stationary for a few minutes. Sure enough the radiator fan is not starting up. Though when I got back home after testing and switched off the ignition the fan did start up. That was reassuring as the fan was replaced a year ago!
Yes - the AC was on when the the original loss of "steam" occurred. It lasted 15 seconds or so and was quite loud. The fluid on the cross member below the radiator hose is green. Could that be dye from the AC system? The two compressor pipes/hoses were replaced in July. Dye was added for diagnosis at some point. The AC system still seems to be working. Will ask the shop what they used.
So looks like two separate problems occurring a day apart - not unusual on a ten year old car, though I guess escaping AC fluids/gases in the grille area could have got at the fan electrics.
