Re: "Bad water pump" + derailed serpentine belt Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: "Bad water pump" + derailed serpentine belt, Justin VanAbrahams ![]() |
I pulled off the plastic shields in the wheel well and removed the serpentine belt. The belt looks to be in very good shape, as do the tensioner and idler pulley. The water pump has a visible leak - well, it's not actively leaking, but you can see where it had leaked. The water pump pulley is quite wobbly. I guess the belt slid off the water pump...
The water reservoir is full, although the oil was down 1qt. I added oil and started the car. Started right up and idled perfectly... I let it sit for a minute or two then shut it down. No obvious sign of engine issues, so the missing oil may just be normal consumption, or loss from sitting for a couple months, or something worse. After running it, the oil was clean although with no pressure on the cooling system any head gasket leak would probably not be apparent. Still, I'd expect to see some aftermath in the cooling system or sump if the head gasket was blown.
Anyway, new parts will be here this week and I'll change the water pump and see what happens. I know the ABS is hosed (light is on and stays on) and the convertible top doesn't work (the pump reservoir is quite low). Not too many issues to sort out, and it sounds like this $1200 car is going to be quite the bargain! (Knock on wood :)
