On my 1995 900S, I had a slow leak that dripped along the block behind the water pump as you describe. It turned out not to be the pump itself, but the cast aluminum inlet tube that connects the pump to the block. There is a o-ring near each end of the tube to seal the connections. The first time this happened, I replaced just the o-rings and that worked for a while but the leak returned. I had noticed some pitting in the o-ring grooves on the tube during the first fix, so I replaced the tube & the o-rings the second time. It's been tight for about three years now.
Also, I polished the inside of the bore on the block with some scotch-brite° to provide a good surface for the o-ring to mate to. See items # 41, 42, & 45 at the link below. You can click on the "See Larger Picture" button to get a good view of what I'm talking about. If this is where your leak is, you can likely go a little while before the leak would get terribly worse, but YMMV.
