Loose / Non Shifting on 1997 900SE

I have a 1997 900SE manual transmission. Last week when driving the car I parked and put the car in reverse. I think I pushed pretty hard but nothing unusual. When I went to move the car later, the shift was all loose. The car was probably stuck in 3rd or fourth. I couldn't tell and couldn't switch to any other gear. The clutch was clearly engaging correctly.
I had it towed to my garage and he stated that some plastic linkage behind the firewall became disengaged. At first he thought it was a $15 part, but later came back and said I needed a whole new gearbox assembly for $245. In the meantime he put everything back together and said it felt tight so I might as well drive it.
Two days later the same thing happened, this time when shifting to first gear. Again, the shifter is very loose, and I can move it around in a circle without changing the gear. It is stuck in third or forth. I was able to "pop" the plastic socket back on and again it seems ok.
Can these part be replaced seperately or do I need a whole new gearbox assembly. Is there anyway to make it stay on better? One side stays connected so I can't really look at the part to see why it is popping off.
Thanks
