If you stop shifting into first when it's rolling it shouldn't get any worse--you can easly take off from even a dead stop in second since they have so much torque. My NG990 had worn syncros in third when I bought it. I've just gotten used to hesitating for a split second in neutral and it hasn't changed a bit in 25K. You could double clutch it but it's better just let it stop completely. I never down shift into first at a roll which is a habit I develope learning to drive in British cars in the 60's. Old habits die hard.
