I actually own two at the moment. One for a few years and one for two months that I got for $300.
My suggestion is to find one that was Saab maintained religiously and has the records. Not a guarantee but you will be able to know is coming.
My first '96 I bought about four or five years ago for about $3500. It had 88,000 miles and now close to 120,000. I was looking for a Honda but were priced much higher. In the past couple of years what I've had to repair include an axle, ABS brain, brakes, antenna, exhaust, ignition switch, radio, rear brake lines, starter and soon to be done is a master brake cylinder rebuild and putting in a used secondary air injector.
My $300 one I bought for parts. It has 225,000 miles on it and just did a 2,000 mile trip without a hiccup. It had the timing chain redone a couple years ago and now it runs great. It also had a recent ignitions switch done, brakes, and lots of other things.
I bought the first one knowing that things would go wrong but I do my own work and expect to. If you stick to Saabnet you will learn a lot, save some dough on parts, and be able to get a diagnosis quick.
I don't think any of the S line had the DI cassette, I think that is the SE turbo. So that shouldn't be a problem. I think the air injector and ignition switch are not unheard of. I believe some issues of my first are due to the original owner living on a dirt road leading to the brake line failure.
Overall, that car should be priced around $1,500 - $2,000 give or take. I'm looking at reselling my $300 one for more because I think the original owner needed money in a hurry and lived out in the boonies and had few offers. I would say for those miles you can expect to see brakes, and some electrical gremlins but the engine should run good and the tranny should be good too. If you aren't a mechanic then I too might suggest looking at a different brand but I do think you get a lot of well thought out design with the Saab and one dedicated community.
