thanks for the reply. when i installed the speakers, especially the dash, i couldn't find any markings on the wires at all. they were just brown. like you said, usually there will at least be some sort of mark or color difference. the door speakers had completely different colors entirely between the driver/passenger.
i haven't even looked at the door speaker amp yet but will uncover it and test the polarity from the wires with a 9 volt as explained here http://www.sweetwater.com/expert-center/techtips/d--12/15/1999. will be slightly easier than pulling both door panels off. i'll do the same with the old dash speakers to make sure their polarity is correct.
i'm thinking of now adding 3.5 or 4" speakers in the dash in conjunction with the tweeters. would love to find a 4" midrange only speaker without a tweeter built in but haven't found one yet. not sure if having two tweeters per channel will make it too high end heavy or not.
though i have two amps and a 1 farad capacitor from my old '87 9000 i would prefer to keep the stock headunit. i really like my steering wheel controls and want to make use of the door speaker amp. looking into either splicing into the tape deck leads or getting the ipod adapter from granitembedded as well.
