The idler pulley on my 1998 900SET has been replaced 3 times.
Once at 35K-miles by the dealer due to a noisy bearing, then again by me at 65K-miles and 105K-miles as routine maintenance.
At the 65K-mile mark I changed to the short belt mod (by-passing the center idler pulley) which meant a new shorter belt to go along with a new stock idler pulley. At 105K-miles I again changed the belt (not really necessary as the belt showed very little wear), along with a hopefully more robust Wazee aluminum billet idler pulley and a new stock tensioner pulley.
The stock idler pulley's bearings were definitely loose and noisy at each change (35K, 65K, and 105K miles). The tensioner pulley appeared to be fine at 105k-miles, but was changed as precaution.
