I feel your pain...

...except for the FL -> MD part, I grew up in Boston and live in northeast PA now. I visited a friend in MD a year ago and thought it was balmy by comparison! :)
Anyway, last month I bought an '01 9-3 to replace an identical one that was wrecked. I immediately knew something was wrong because the temp gauge wouldn't go past 8 o'clock, but the following day (warm for late December, at 40F) it came right up to 9 as it should. It sucks now, with the temps in the teens, because it takes the entire duration of my 15-minute commute for the car to warm up - but hey, at least the seats are heated!
I've never done a thermostat (I'm new to DIY) but agree that it looks fairly easy. I've just been similarly dragging my feet on deciding which coolant to use and hoping for a "nice" (35-degree?) day to make the swap.
