ok, so the reason it wouldn't crank is because the wire from the solenoid to the starter was toast.
$40 shipped - new brush holder from:
http://www.wai-wetherill.com/
this link is the starter with all the related parts:
http://www.wai-wetherill.com/products/sresult1bom.cfm?ManufName=BOSCH&item=0-001-108-151
if i was a good solderer i could've just fixed the wire but the brushes were 2/3 gone anyway.
this worked for about a week. one morning i went out and it clicked. my theory is that the wire was toast and the solenoid contact to that wire is also faulty. (i suppose i should've taken the solenoid apart while i had the starter off)
i know i have juice to the solenoid. so i am assuming it is the solenoid.
before i go removing the unit, i will test the contact and make sure i have juice going from the solenoid to the starter.
(i also checked the clutch pedal contact to ensure that was working properly, automatics have a neutral switch too)
do these solenoids have a contact cap that can be removed? if not i will probably order one from wetherill tomorrow. not sure how much they are asking for this item yet. my guess is $40 plus shipping. their's does come
with a removable cap
at this point i am wondering whether buying a starter from the get-go would've have the most prudent and frugal thing to do given the amount of time and effort this issue has been.
i hope this works!!
after this issue is resolved i can finally focus on the rough starting.
